Electric Umbrella street piano launching at Atria Watford!

News Item

In partnership with Electric Umbrella and Watford BID, we are excited to announce that we are launching their third street piano right here at Atria Watford on Friday 24th June at 1am!

Who are Electric Umbrella?

Electric Umbrella became a registered charity in 2016, three years after they started on their incredible journey. The charity was founded by musician Tom Billington and art therapist Mel Boda, who recognised there were few opportunities for learning disabled people to take to ‘the stage’.

Tom and Mel delivered workshops across Hertfordshire, raising small amounts of money through crowdfunding initiatives and busking opportunities. Within two years they had delivered hundreds of hours of music workshops, performed to thousands of people at gigs, and held their first summer festival, Umbrellafest.

They are now supported by a group of amazing pro-musicians, a small, dedicated staff team, and lots of amazing volunteers.

What is their mission?

They create amazing, live interactive music experiences with learning disabled people. When their superstars take to the stage, they help change the way the world looks at them - and others.

Everyone in the community can work with professional musicians, to co-produce extraordinary performances. The community of more than 2,000 people take part in a range of co-created sessions with brilliant pro-musicians, which are free to attend. These include EUTV, Open Mic nights, Singalongs, and the Breakfast Club.

And when they all come together, the power of performance comes to life spectacularly through the Big Yellow Choir, albums, live shows, festivals, and tours in front of tens of thousands of people each year!

The launch event

Electric Umbrella are bringing music and fun to the streets of Watford by launching a series of street pianos hosted by local businesses. The next launch will include performances from members and professional pianist Duncan Honeybourne.

Pianist Duncan Honeybourne who will perform with the charity at the launch said:

"Electric Umbrella is a wonderful organisation, and I'm heartened and touched to be involved! I'm autistic and music has been wonderful for me on my journey. I don't know what I would have done without such an expressive, creative outlet - it really has been an anchor.

"I performed with Electric Umbrella members online during lockdown, so I am very much looking forward to meeting members face to face and performing in Watford. It's going to be a happy, illuminating day!

The event will be held in our Atrium, outside NEXT and Puttshack. With performances taking place from 1.00pm - 3.00pm. We encourage you to come down and experience the magic of this wonderful musical experience!
